Irwin Mango Tree
Irwin Mango Tree
Irwin mango is cross pollinated between Haden and Lippens mango. Originated from Florida, Irwin mango introduced into Australia in the late 1970s as part of the Department of Primary Industries & Fisheries Queensland, mango introduction and evaluation program.
Irwin is a monoembryonic variety, so the seeds, if planted, will not produce seedlings that fruit true-to-type. For this reason, Irwin must be propagated via grafting method, and it’s usually done on Kensington Pride rootstock.
According to Wikipedia, “Irwin fruit is of ovate shape, with a rounded base and a pointed apex, lacking a beak. The smooth skin develops an eye-catching dark red blush at maturity. The flesh is yellow and has a mild but sweet flavour and a pleasant aroma. It is fibreless”
