Chilean Guava (Ugni molinae) also known as Tazzberry, makes a wonderful edible hedge. This evergreen bush features red tinged glossy dark green leaves and attractive fragrant flowers in Summer. The delicious fruit are about the size of a blueberry and ripen in Autumn, beginning burgundy and lightening as they ripen. Tasting like a cross between strawberries and vanilla cream, the aromatic fruit are delicious and can be eaten straight off the bush or used in cooking.
Chilean Guava are an extremely hardy plant that will grow and bear fruit in almost any position and climate. Drought tolerant once established, these hardy shrubs are not usually troubled by pests or disease, and birds will normally leave the berries alone, meaning no need to protect crops with netting.
